When Toyota and Subaru brought their respective rear-wheel-drive compact sport coupes to the market, the enthusiasts of the world rejoiced. After all, it’s always exciting when automakers bring sporty products into their lineup, and the GT86/FR-S/BRZ siblings are just that.
These are fun to drive machines that don’t cost a ton of money to purchase. Still… they could always be faster. The quick solution is the addition of a turbocharger. Enter the Crawford-tuned BRZ, which makes over 500 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque.
It’s not just a turbo, of course, as Crawford has been working hard to get its BRZ into super sports car shape. Everything they’ve done sounds like a recipe for a machine that’s itching to hit racetracks and set fast lap times. That’s precisely what Bill Caswell had in mind when he jumped behind the wheel of the Crawford car to compete at the Redline Time Attack held at Buttonwillow Raceway.
The idea of the event is that you get one shot at setting your fastest lap. You… attack it, so to speak. Caswell may be more used to pushing his BMW E30 through a gravel stage, but he’s also a solid wheelman on the non-sliding stuff. Behind the wheel of the Crawford BRZ, Bill was able to break down below the two minute mark. That was good enough to earn him a trophy at the end of the day.
Caswell put together a video highlighting his experience with the car. He says it’s fast, and that you’re grabbing for the next gear right away because the car is screaming down the road as the engine roars towards redline. Sounds like a heck of a machine, and we look forward to more highly tuned BRZ/FR-S examples thanks to the parts available from Crawford.
